Installation and Startup

Windows 95, 98, Me 1. To install Thinkin’ Things FrippleTown, insert the CD ROM. If AutoPlay is not enabled, choose Run from the Start menu and type d:\setup (where d represents your CD-ROM drive) 2. To Run Thinkin’ Things FrippleTown, use the Start menu. (If AutoPlay is enabled, Thinkin’ Things FrippleTown automatically runs when the CD-ROM is inserted.) Windows 2000 or XP Professional 1. Log in as administrator. 2. Follow the installation instructions listed under Windows 95, 98, or Me above Macintosh 1. Insert the CD-ROM 2. Double-click the Thinkin’ Things FrippleTown program icon.

FAQ/Troubleshooting

1. “My computer locks up when I run Thinkin’ Things FrippleTown”.

An incompatibility with the WaveSynth component of the Creative Labs AWE32 sound card can cause this issue. Disabling the WaveSynth component should allow the program to function properly. The procedure below describes the process. To disable WaveSynth in the Creative Labs AWE32, follow the steps listed below. NOTE: The WaveSynth component must be re-enable to run programs that are enhanced by the component. 1. Double-click the My Computer icon. 2. Double-click the Control Panel icon. 3. Double-click the System icon and click the Device Manager tab. 4. Click the plus [+] sign next to Sound, Video and Game Controllers. Listed here are the several different sound devices installed on the computer. 5. Double-click the Creative WaveSynth or WaveSynthG device. The properties of the selected device will display. 6. Place a check in the box next to Disable this device and click OK. 7. Restart the computer to complete the process. 8. After the computer restarts, launch and use the program. The issue should be resolved. NOTE: Remember to enable the WaveSynth component after using the Edmark(r) program to run other programs that are enhanced by the component.

2. “How do I delete names from the Log In screen”?

Deleting the user's folder and editing an .INI file created by the program will delete names from the login screen. The following tutorial describes this process. Complete the procedure below to delete a name. Remove a Name from the Login Screen 1. Close any open windows or programs and return to the desktop. 2. Navigate to the location where this product is installed. To navigate to the default location, complete these steps: s. Double-click the My Computer icon. t. Double-click the C:\ drive. u. Double-click the Program Files folder. v. Double-click the Edmark folder. w. Double-click the folder that shows a name that is similar to or the same as the program you are using. The folder will open. 3. This folder contains one file with an .INI extension. Double-click on this .INI file. The file will open in Notepad. 4. Locate the line for the student to be deleted. NOTE: The line will appear similar to Student=kids\Kid001 (where the word Student represents an actual user name). 5. Write down the number at the end of the line. 6. Delete the line for the student that is to be removed. 7. Click File and choose Exit (or Close, depending on which program title you have). 8. Click Yes when prompted to save the changes. The program folder will reappear. 9. Double-click the Kids folder. 10. Right-click the folder matching the number written down in Step 5 (above) and choose Delete from the menu that appears. If prompted to move the folder to the Recycle Bin, click Yes. 11. Close any open windows and return to the desktop. 12. Launch the program. The student should no longer be on the list.

3. “During installation, the status bar gets to 100% and then everything disappears! When I try to locate the program on my computer, it’s not there”.

Conflicts with Temp files can cause this issue. Deleting the Temp files from the system will help to resolve the issue. Delete the Temp (*.TMP) files in the following manner: 9. Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows(r) desktop. 10. Double-click the hard drive icon. Typically, the hard drive is designated as the (C:) drive. 11. Double-click the Windows folder. 12. Double-click the Temp folder. (This folder is labeled TEMP, not Temporary Internet Files). 13. While in the Temp folder, click Edit and choose Select All. 14. Click File and select Delete. 15. Answer Yes or Yes to All for all of these files. 16. Close all open windows and run the program installation again. NOTE: If this does not work, it may necessary to Delete the TEMP folder. Important! After the installation, make sure to create a new folder named TEMP in the Windows(r) folder. Many applications require this folder in order to function properly.

4. “Can I run Thinkin’ Things FrippleTown without using the CD?

Yes! Complete the following steps. NOTE: The following instructions only apply to the stand-alone installation of this product. The network installation does not require the CD at any time. Copying this CD-ROM program onto the hard drive will require between 18 MB and 100 MB of hard drive space, depending on the program.

1. Install the program as detailed in the instructions in the User's Guide.
2. Once the installation is complete, leave the CD in the drive and proceed with the following.
3. Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
4. Right-click the CD-ROM drive and select Open.
5. Double-click the folder icon with a name similar or related to the name of the product.
6. Click Edit and click Select All.
7. Press and hold the CTRL key and click the Demo, Dearpar and Parents folders. This will deselect these icons and leave all of the other icons highlighted. NOTE: If the folders cannot be located, skip this step.
8. Click File and click Properties. Next to the Size label should be a number followed by MB. This is the amount of hard drive space required to install the program.
9. Click OK.
10. From the top menu bar, click Edit and click Copy.
11. Close all windows and return to the desktop.
12. Double-click the My Computer icon.
13. Double-click the hard drive (usually the C: drive).
14. Double-click Program Files.
15. Double-click the Edmark folder icon.
16. Double-click the folder with the name of the program to be copied.
17. From the menu bar, click Edit and click Paste. The files from the CD will now be copied to the hard drive.
18. If prompted to overwrite or replace any files, answer "Yes to All." NOTE: Due to the large amount of data being transferred, this process may take several minutes. Once the process is complete, the copying window will disappear. Wait until this window disappears before proceeding to the next step.
19. Once the copy procedure is complete, click Edit and click Select All.
20. From the menu bar, click File and click Properties.
21. Click the box next to "Read-only" so that it does not contain a check mark.
22. Click OK.
23. Close all open windows by clicking the X in the upper-right corner.
24. Remove the CD from the CD-ROM drive and launch the program. The prompt to insert the CD should no longer appear.
