Volume Library 1 + 2

The Volume Library is easy for both parents and children alike to use. Initially you can find which subjects are in which Volume by looking down the spine of each one, where the general topics are listed. Volume One and Two work together, in that at the front of both of them there is a comprehensive contents page for BOTH books, so no matter which book you’re in you can look to the front and check to see if you are in the right volume.

Each section also has its own contents page at the beginning and is color coded for quick and easy reference. The colors of each section in both books can be found down the sides of the inside front cover.

The index for Volumes One and Two can be found at the back of Volume Two, as indicated on the spine. This covers everything in the first two volumes and is organized alphabetically. Once a subject has been located the first number indicates the corresponding chapter, the second is the page number within that chapter (each chapter starts at page one), and then there is a little a, b, or c which is the column e.g. 24: 113 a-b. To find which chapters are in which volumes simply look at the tables at the side of each page in the index.

Volume Three has a picture location index inside both the front and back covers. The red number under the name of each country signifies the page number on which all the relevant information for that country can be found. The USA is broken down into States and European countries are shown in more detail at the bottom of the page, each with its own allocated page.

Each section in Volume Three has its own contents page, as well as a general contents page at the front, showing the corresponding colors for each section. Again, each section is color coded for easy reference.

Student Handbooks

The Student Handbooks can be used individually or collectively. On the inside cover of each volume there is a general contents page for each handbook, as well as a subject map, which shows you the contents of that particular handbook, organized by subject matter.

In the center of each handbook there is an index, marked by the blue-edged pages. Each index is exactly the same and covers material in Handbooks one through four. When you locate a subject the first number in BOLD is the volume number and the second number is the page number e.g. 2: 135.

At the back of each handbook there is something special, whether its fun experiments in Volume One, or the Roget’s Thesaurus in Volume Three. At the beginning of the Thesaurus there is an explanation on how to use it, as it is organized by topic and NOT alphabetically.

The Learning Companion

The Learning Companion is three volumes broken down into six “books.” At the front of each volume there is a general contents page for all six books and at the end of each book there is an index for that particular book. Unlike the Student Handbooks and the Volume Library, it does not cross reference. You will also find a detailed contents page at the beginning of each book to give you more specific information on the subject area you are researching.

Health and Wellness Handbooks

The Health and Wellness Handbooks are organized in alphabetical order, so you can simply use them like a dictionary. At the front of Book One there is a contents page outlining the different sections, and at the back of Book Two there is a section on alternative therapies, massage, yoga, and acupuncture. There is also an emergency section with red-edged pages for quick and easy reference.

Explore and Learn

The Explore and Learn set has a contents page at the front of each volume which tells you everything that is in all six volumes organized under subject heading. There is an index at the back of each book which includes all the material covered in all six books; therefore each index is the same and allows for easy cross referencing. The first number you’ll see (in a circle) is the volume number, and the second number is the page number. At the beginning of each index there is also an explanation of how it works.

Ask Me Why

The Ask Me Why series works as individual books. Each of the twelve books has its own index and contents page; therefore they can not be used for cross referencing.

SUGGESTION

No matter which set of books you bought, it is HIGHLY recommended that your children spend 20 minutes to half an hour looking through them in order to get used to the layout and how they work. I would also advise you to make sure that they are easily accessible; wherever the kids do their homework that’s where they need to be, especially for the first two weeks. The more the kids use them, the more they will use them.
