What is Southwestern ?

The Southwestern Summer Program began in 1868, helping students finance their education through selling books to families in their homes. The students are independent contractors, and have the opportunity to run their own businesses by buying products from Southwestern at wholesale and selling them to customers at retail.

How much money can you make?

The amount of money you make depends directly on your sales results. They money doesn't "come easy" either -- the most successful students work 72+ hours every single week of the summer. Does it work? In 2006, the average first-time participant made $7,944 for their 3 month summer.

What’s the catch?

This program is not for everybody. It is designed for students who desire growth and a challenge. There are long hours and no guaranteed income. It’s not exactly glamorous, but prestige comes after the summer in the form of real world experience, personal growth, and unparalleled financial opportunities.

What does it take to be successful at this?

As with any challenge, this program requires three crucial elements: You must:

  • Work Hard
  • Study Hard
  • Be Coachable
Success is based on the number of families students talk to each day The most successful students make 30 or more presentations each day. What you gain from this program is in direct proportion to your efforts.

How does the money work?

If selected, you are considered an independent contractor, meaning you will be running your own business. As an independent contractor, you will be purchasing educational books and software at a wholesale price from the Southwestern Company. You will then sell those products to private families in their homes at a retail price. The difference between the retail and wholesale prices is the profit you make.

Is there any money up front?

There is no charge for any of the training you would receive or any book bags, samples, or any other supplies at Sales School. You are advised to bring $400-$500 for the trip to Sales School and your expenses for that week (food, gas, lodging). This amount varies because students travel different distances to attend Sales School.

What if I don’t know how to sell?

You don't have to. The summer begins with a five-day training seminar called "Sales School". This training is designed to instruct you on how to sell as well as how to run your own business. You are taught a standardized approach as well as organized sales presentations. The training is divided between a morning of classroom instruction and an afternoon of self practice with one-on-one coaching by students who have participated in the Southwestern Program in previous summers.

What if I don’t have a car?

Although encouraged, a car is not required. If you do not have access to an automobile for the summer you will be working in an area where one is not required, i.e. a more populated area.

Where will I be selling?

Typically you would be selling in different area of the country for the summer time. Southwestern has found from experience that students working away from home face fewer distractions and take their work more seriously. Plus, future employers like resumes/CVs which show you're willing to relocate.

What are the daily or weekly hours?

The most successful students in the program start their day at 9:00 am and continue until 8:30 or 9:00 at night. This schedule continues Monday through Saturday. On Sundays, you would meet with other students selling in surrounding areas to exchange ideas and receive additional training. Most organizations take advantage of Sunday afternoons by having some fun in the new part of the country they are calling home for the summer.

Where would I live?

Southwestern's host family coordinators work year-round to help locate suitable housing for each student before each summer. Most students share the cost of accommodation in a private home with two or three other student dealers. In the rare event arrangements with a host family are not finalized before students leave sales school, Southwestern will pay for the first week's lodging in a local extended stay hotel, and students will locate their permanent places during their first week on the field

Who will I be working with?

Generally, you would be working with a group of students from your university. Part of the Southwestern experience is creating new friendships with highly motivated people like you!
